One Orthodox Jewish woman breaking down stereotypes about Orthodox Jews and offering a humorous meaningful look into traditional Judaism |

Some have called her an Orthodox Carrie Bradshaw. Others say that she's the next Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis. Allison Josephs (a.k.a. Jew in the City) doesn't focus much on comparisons, she simply wants to re-brand Orthodox Jews and Judaism. Both have gotten a very negative reputation over the years due to isolated scandals that have made the headlines as well as movies, books, and TV shows that have repeated and reinforced misconceptions and stereotypes about religious Jewish people and their lifestyles. (The hole in the sheet, anyone?)
JewintheCity.com opens up this usually closed-off world through YouTube videos, a blog, and interactive question and answer section of the site. You can even request a telephone appointment to speak with Jew in the City, yourself!
Allison wants the world to know that Orthodox Jews can be normal, funny, educated, and open-minded. She wears a wig, but that doesn't make her subjugated. (And by the way, like most wig-wearing Orthodox Jewish women, she does not shave her head.) Most Jews associate Judaism with negative experiences like boring High Holiday services, endless Passover seders, and getting in trouble in Hebrew School.
Besides myth debunking, JewintheCity.com also aims to show people that Judaism is meant to be a vehicle for spirituality and even though many Jews look to other religions to feel spiritual (particularly Eastern religions, like Buddhism) there is a deep and beautiful heritage to be found within their own backyards. Allison also writes on events that occur in her everyday life, including the world-wide Financial Crisis, and finds philosophical lessons to be gleaned from them.
Allison lives in New York City, herself, but her site is enjoyed by people all over the planet - from Australia to Israel, France to China, Turkey to South Africa. Come see for yourself what everbody's talking about!
